Virtual Mental Health Care: Breaking Down the Barriers

Health-E-Now Team🕐 5 min read

Why more Canadians are choosing online mental-health support, and what to expect from your first virtual session.

For a lot of people, the hardest part of getting mental-health support is the logistics: finding someone, getting time off work, sitting in a waiting room where you might run into a neighbour. Virtual care removes most of that friction, which is exactly why it has grown so quickly.

What a first session looks like

A first visit is mostly a conversation. The physician wants to understand what has been going on, how long, how it is affecting your sleep, work, and relationships, and what support you already have. From there you build a plan together: that might be counselling, medication, lifestyle changes, referrals, or simply a follow-up to see how things evolve.

Being at home helps more people than it hinders. You are in your own space, you can keep notes in front of you, and there is no commute buffering you from just starting.

When virtual is not enough

Virtual care is not for a crisis. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1. In a mental-health crisis you can call or text 9-8-8, Canada's suicide crisis helpline, at any hour.

For everything below that threshold, the best first step is often the easiest one you will actually take. A video call from your couch counts.

This article is general health information, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For guidance about your own health, talk to a licensed physician. If this is an emergency, call 9-1-1. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 9-8-8.
