Virtual Care 101: What to Expect From Your First Online Visit

Health-E-Now Team🕐 4 min read

From booking to follow-up, a plain-English walkthrough of how an online doctor's visit actually works.

If you have never seen a doctor online, the first visit can feel like a leap. Here is the whole process, demystified.

Before the visit

You describe what is going on in a sentence or two, answer a short intake about your health history, and pick a time. The intake matters: it is how the physician arrives already knowing your allergies, medications, and what brought you in.

During the visit

At your appointment time you join a secure video or audio call. No app download, any device with a camera and microphone works. The visit itself runs like any focused appointment: questions, discussion, and a plan. Physicians on the platform can prescribe where appropriate, order lab requisitions, write sick notes, and refer you onward.

After the visit

Your visit summary lands in your portal in plain language. Prescriptions go electronically to your chosen pharmacy. If the physician wants a follow-up, you can book it in a few taps.

One honest note: not everything belongs online. Chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, or anything that feels like an emergency belongs at 9-1-1 or your nearest emergency department, not in a video queue.

This article is general health information, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For guidance about your own health, talk to a licensed physician. If this is an emergency, call 9-1-1. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 9-8-8.
